100 Days Under Siege: a member message

For Artspace members:

Many of us have heard the strikers/protesters using words such as "shame on you" , or "shame, shame, shame" in particularly, but not exclusively, to the replacement staff.
In relation to the labour dispute please realize that using the word "shame" may be a part of the bullying profile/tactic and it is important to:
1. Report it to Roxanne/Kriss by email or handwritten left at their door. If you can specify the date and time we might be able to connect the security cameras with your report.
2. Do not use the word "shame" in retaliation for the comments made by others on the picket line. Be careful not to become the bully.
One resource says:
"Shame is not the same as guilt.
When we feel guilt, it's about something we did.
When we feel shame, it's about who we are.
When we feel guilty we need to learn
that it's OK to make mistakes.
When we feel shame we need to learn
that it's OK to be who we are!"
When used in a bullying situation, the intent is to make the other person feel worthless, valueless, and create a sense of failure. It is beyond feeling guilty for taking gainful employment. Personally, I don't feel the replacement staff should feel guilty at all and I think there is support for their critical role at this time.
I feel it is important we reminder ourselves and the ones who have been bullied, that they are worthy, valuable, and accepted for who they are. Our replacement workers, from what I have heard, continue to do a great job and many are definitely grateful they are here. And remember, our own neighbours, board members, friends and family members might be affected by the 'shaming,' as well and need to know they are supported, valued and greatly appreciated as well.
Because of the detrimental effects of bullying, yelling, and 'shaming' please report these incidents you see/hear on the "picket line."
There is quite a variety of information on the web if you would like to explore this concept further.
I continue to look for good resources to share on coping with our kind of situation. We certainly are unique.
Please note: I am not writing on behalf of the Co-op, nor of SAIL. I am member. What is said is my opinion not necessarily that of any other individual or group.
