Video of the Day: trespassing again

More videos have been uploaded.  There are getting to be so many of them, we have started to organise them by dates and creating dedicated posts back dated to when the events recorded actually happened.  In the process, some date errors were caught (two posts with incidents reported in June were accidentally posted in May), so please to go into the archives listed on the right and revisit the early days of the strike.  These back dated posts are being put up in chronological order.

One more from May 11, this time in the evening.  It's the last one for now, unless more video is found or submitted in the future.

Four days into the strike, and Malka is already earning the nicknames he got before people learned his name.

From the labour relations guide, page 44.

Picketing must be peaceful and carried out without trespassing or other unlawful acts.  Violent or unlawful acts can involve legal consequences and may affect the employees’ continued employment.

That lot's been empty for many years, and often frequented by the homeless, transients and others.  There isn't much anyone can do about that, besides the camps being cleared out every now and then and regular patrolling by the police.

As a picketer on strike, however, it's a different issue.  The lot is clearly marked as private property, and trespassing is expressly forbidden.  Even if Malka somehow managed to miss the signs, he was still told by a security guard that he was trespassing.  In typical fashion, he turned and twisted that into something else entirely.

So he knew full well that he was trespassing, and did it anyway.

Video of the Day: Going back in time

Here's some video going to the third day of the strike.

There's a tremendous amount of trespassing in this video, as well as aggressive and threatening behaviour.

The trespassing was justified because a new Artspace member invited them onto Artspace property; AUPE had taken advantage of this member, since doing what he did was an infraction of membership.  He ended up leaving Artspace soon after, but not before things went pretty sour between him and AUPE.

AUPE seems to be very good at taking advantage of people - including their own supporters - then throwing them under the bus.

One of the remarkable things to watch is David Malka, Jaime Urbina (aka Urbina-Maclean, who was identified in security video as the picket captain) and some other guy engage in behaviour they then accuse security of engaging in.  Just as remarkable is seeing Desiree Schell accuse the security guy of taunting the man who is behaving in a threatening and intimidating manner.

This is the sort of behaviour that has had many of us seriously question the psychological state of some AUPE picketers.  I've said it before, and I suspect, I'll be saying it many times more;

Normal people don't behave this way.

On the garden

One of the many ways AUPE picketers have shown their complete contempt and disrespect for the Artspace community, even at those times when they have been otherwise quiet, has been their constant use of one of our raised bed gardens for their own personal seating.

This garden bed was designed for better accessibility (though not wheelchair accessibility; those are the other raised beds) for our members who wanted to garden, but could not get to the plots available behind the townhouses.

Due to the size of the space, the bed was divided into two parts, with a narrow access path in between, for better reach.  Picketers frequently would be seen in this pathway, sometimes with their butts on one side and their feet up on the other.  Other times, they are seen puttering about in the plants.  This, in spite of the private property signs in both sides of the garden bed.

Several members maintain the plants in there, and they have been taking advantage of at least one of our members who has been allowing them to "help" her.  It is expressly forbidden for members to invite picketers to trespass on Artspace private property, and they know this, seeing as how there are signs stating this all around the high rise.  The member is not being held at fault for this, since we know full well they are using her for their own purposes, but it is sickening to watch them take advantage of her like this.  I suppose it's not a surprise.  They have a thing for targeting the vulnerable, though not a single one of them could ever match this person for sheer strength of will.  Sometimes, it is those who appear the most fragile that turn out to be the most mighty.  If they want to see what real dignity looks like, they could learn a lot from our members.  Instead, they use, manipulate and take advantage.  Of course, it's what they're being paid to do (while some insist they are volunteers, we've heard non-SAIL picketers talk about being paid $11 an hour to be here, though of course, there's no way to verify that).

Aside from blatant disregard for private property (and being an object, not part of any sidewalks or entryways, it cannot be considered part of the 4 ft easement), it is damaging the bed.  While having someone occasionally sit or lean on the beds for a short time will not harm them, they were not designed for seating.  Certainly not by groups of people almost daily for months.

The picketers know this.

They know they aren't supposed to use the garden beds to sit or lean on.  They know it because people have asked them to get off, at which point they might stand up, but go right back to sitting on them again soon after.  They know this because they read about it on this blog.

They obviously don't care.

Well, someone finally got tired of it and put up some little signs, in addition to the other Private Property signs.

An extra one was added to the middle, just for a bit of humour.

I don't think they got the joke.

There was also some fly paper added to the top of the garden walls.

Of course, when the picketers showed up, they obviously weren't happy with it, but they did end up spending more time on the other side of the street, where they could lean against their rental van.  If they did actually obey the signs and refrain from sitting on the walls for a change, I will at least credit them for that.

Unfortunately, less than 24 hours after these went up, someone took it all down.  Not just the fly paper, but the signs, as well.

We don't know who.  Most members were quite pleased with the signs - and the fly paper!  Perhaps one of their insiders did it?  Funny; seeing "infiltration" as one of the types of misconduct forbidden in the labour regulations, it seemed like such an odd thing.  Unfortunately, now we understand why it's there.

It really is like something out of a bad spy movie, except that it's real people's lives that are being manipulated and twisted.  They use both the honey and the stick, in typical abuser fashion.  They are trying to play members against each other; most of whom have no direct connection to SAIL.  It's just a game to them, with human beings for game pieces.

With the signs gone, I would hope they still got the message and will show some respect for other people's things, seeing as how they're constantly going on about how all they want is "dignity and respect."

Of course, if they truly understood dignity and respect, they wouldn't be picketing our private homes to begin with, nor would they be using and abusing our members, never mind using other people's things for their own convenience.

This whole thing would have gone very, very differently if only AUPE had stuck to labour regulations from the start.

Every now and then, we get people who make comments about how the real bad guy in all this isn't AUPE or SAIL, but AHS, for not providing enough funding to meet AUPE's demands.

That is something outside the scope of this labour dispute.  SAIL can only work with the numbers AHS gives them, and AUPE can either choose to accept that or not.

They chose not to.

Which is irrelevant to what is happening at our home.

It is not AHS that is responsible for AUPE choosing to picket our homes rather than the place of employment.

It is not AHS that's responsible for AUPE trying to designate our co-op as some sort of long term care facility, rather than private homes, to justify their actions.

It's is not AHS that's responsible for AUPE picketers who engage in blatant misconduct, deliberately targeting a community with their abusive behaviour.

It was AUPE that chose to go the aggressive route, and the responsibility lies with them, and with the individuals who have been engaging in those activities.

Like dignity and respect, I suspect their definition of responsibility isn't quite the same as anyone else's.

Video of the Day: Trespassing

Having AUPE picketing our homes was bad enough, with the verbal abuse, intimidation, harassment, bullying, noise, etc.  One of the other problems was frequent trespassing.

Here are just a few examples, not only of trespassing, but theft of electricity.

You'll also see David Malka had brought the air raid siren back, tried to pass it off as a generator, then tried to set it up under the canopy of the main doors to the high rise.

Thanks to security keeping on him, he never got a chance to use it.

An Aggressive Photo Opp

Since we no longer have security guards, the AUPE picketers have stepped up their aggressive actions, as well as using our home for convenient photo opps.

They have been showing up at earlier hours, coming and going, to the point that we have no idea when or where to expect them.  At times, they appeared to be gone, only to show up to disrupt mail delivery or garbage pick up.

Today (Sept. 10), Artspace members were awakened by their noise as early as 6:30am, they were seen trespassing both at the front lobby entrance of the high rise, and at the rear, where they followed a care worker (not a replacement workers) through the rear parking lot to the back door of the high rise, harassing her, then grabbed the door as she went in, and they have been stalking replacement workers off site.

A large and loud crowed showed up and they set up at both sides of the high rise, with groups of people continually moving from front to back.  There were perhaps 30 people in total, though only 3 could be identified as striking SAIL staff.

As many as 16 people at once, possibly more, were seen staking out the back area, at the end of 94th St.

And oh, look...

There's Deb Arcand, going at it with an Artspace member.
This woman needs help with anger management.

Meanwhile, more were at the parking lot entrance, and still others were in front of the high rise, including Guy Smith, who would sometimes join this group here.

They did their photo opp before they left.

Check out the comment from a picketer at about the 2 minute mark.

The picketers had these pamphlets, one of which was found on a person's car - again, on private property, so someone had to trespass to put it there.

So they are putting out photos of the replacement workers as targets.

There's only one problem.

They have photos of people on here that are NOT replacement workers.

It should be noted, however, that the replacement workers aren't taking away anyone's job.  The striking staff are the only ones responsible for any consequences to their jobs, no one else.

The replacement workers are being targeted with increasing levels of aggression and intimidation, now that security isn't around to hold the picketers back.

And AUPE doesn't seem to mind that laws are being broken to do it.

As for the replacement workers, they are absolutely awesome.  They are fantastic people, with great attitudes, and they are doing a great job, even after putting up with months of abuse.

These people truly are the "care" workers, not the ones outside.

Video of the Day: the screaming banshees.

Today's video of the day took place almost immediately after the video featured yesterday.

This one involved SAIL staffers, Wiltah and Marga, yelling and shrieking as they verbally harass one of their former co-workers, who is coming to work to provide Self Managed Care for a non-SAIL using member.

The creepy part starts at around 2:30, when AUPE negotiator, Kevin Davediuk, starts yelling out to her, "thanks for giving us your address."

So he's basically saying, "we know where you live" in an obvious attempt at intimidation.

From AUPE's negotiator.

Aimed at someone whom he should have nothing to do with at all.

She's not a union member.

It turns out it's actually quite easy to leave a union.  All you have to do is fill out some paperwork and send it in.

So what he's also doing is confirming that not only did AUPE receive the form, but that he knows about it,

...and her private information that was on it.

...and is using that information to try and intimidate her.

Remember; this is the guy SAIL is supposed to negotiate a collective agreement with.

A collective agreement for the women that are screaming like banshees as they harass a former co-worker, and the other former co-workers looking on.

This?

This is an example of why SAIL users didn't want the staff back, and why a lock-out was filed for.

Imagine, for a moment, that you need home care.  Imagine being a wheelchair user who needs help transferring between bed and chair.  Or needing help taking a shower.  Or eat a meal.  Or even just needing a few minutes help putting on pressure socks, or rubbing lotion on your feet as part of diabetic care.

Now imagine that these women are the ones who might be providing that care.

That's the stuff of nightmares.

Video of the Day: dangerous actions

One of the things AUPE and their picketers do a lot is accuse Artspace members of abusing the picketers and trying to harm them.  Typically, someone in Artspace would describe how the picketers have been harassing, intimidating, threatening, etc. our members, and some spokesperson from AUPE would go, "oh, no, no, no!  We're just the most peaceful people ever!  It's the people in Artspace that have been [fill in the blank] our poor, hapless picketers!  We're not bullies, Artspace members are!"

And the drones would diligently nod their heads, repeat the lies, but make no effort to verify the truth.

Yeah.

Here we have more proof to the contrary.

This video was taken early on June 12, 2014.  The location is at the Northeast side of the high rise.  As described in this post, this is on Artspace private property.  The property line extends into the paved lane.

The video is just over 14 minutes long, but I do not know when they actually started to block the car, so we don't currently know just how much longer the person had been blocked.

The man in the car is an Artspace board member.  He's also the Artspace board representative to the SAIL board, so while he's not on the SAIL board, he's had the misfortune of having to attend the farcical negotiation process with AUPE.

The three women in front are among the few SAIL staff that bother to show up on the picket line, and one of them - the one on the far left - is not one of the regulars. She has another job elsewhere.

The man at the driver's side window is someone we've seen pretty consistently out here, and he is pretty much universally held in disgust for his actions on the picket line, but we had no idea who he was or what connection he had to anything.

Thanks to David Eggen, now we know his name is Jaime Urbina, and what he is.

Young Activist Committee?

So, this guy is some sort of mentor for youth?

Wow.

[Update: Oct. 25 - according to AUPE's documents for their annual convention, this committee is aimed at members aged 30 and under.]

Watch the video right to the end, where you can see him deliberately running in front of a moving vehicle, going out of his way to try and get himself hit.  The picketers, of course, blame the driver, not the idiot jumping in front of a moving vehicle.

He's also with David Eggen and Deb Arcand, posing for a photo on David Malka's Facebook page.

After the fiasco last month, David Eggen apparently went into damage control and tried to claim various things to excuse what he did, but the reality is (as can be seen on his endorsement page), he's quite thoroughly in bed with several people who have been key players in the siege against Artspace members.

Which brings me to the other guy at the car, David Malka.  He was the picket line captain for almost 2 months, and one of the most aggressive and abusive people there.  This is the guy who earned the nicknames Captain McCreepypants, Creeper and The Urinator.  Though no longer on the picket line, he continues to harass Artspace members and creep on them, including while volunteering at the Folk Festival, movie theatres and his personal Facebook page, along with AUPE's fake lawyer, William Rigutto, aka Avocatzo.

What's particularly of note is the guy in the blue shirt who wanders in and out of the video and takes part in the verbal abuse of our board member, which explains why I used the term "farcical" to describe the negotiation process.

That's Kevin Davediuk, the AUPE negotiator, oft quoted by the media.

Let that sink in for a moment.

The AUPE negotiator - the guy SAIL is supposed to be able to work out a collective agreement with - is here at Artspace, taking part in trespassing, excessive blocking and verbal harassment of an Artspace board member and board representative to SAIL.

Let's try and put this into a  first person perspective.

Imagine you have to privately talk to some people to work out a deal of some kind.

The other side is demanding things you can't give them, refuses to compromise, and no deal is reached.

So one of the people you've been talking to shows up at your home, in your driveway, along with a bunch of other aggressive people, traps you in your vehicle, watches while you are verbally harassed and abused for more than 15 minutes, and even takes part in the abuse.

Question:

Do you think this is someone you can go back to the table with and have a civil discussion?

Do you think you'd be able to work out any kind of deal with this person?

Do you think this is a person who could ever negotiate in good faith?

Yet this is the person that SAIL is supposed to negotiate a collective agreement with.

Video of the Day: picketer harassment

Even when there was a strike protocol in place, the picketers harassment of the replacement workers was just as vile.

Note that AUPE VP, Mike Dempsey is not only on the picket line, but takes part in some verbal abuse himself.  (He's the tall guy with the hat.)

This took place the same morning the air raid siren was used by David Malka.

Not even trying

Looking at AUPE's more recent attempt to regain control of their public image via social media Newspeak has been ... interesting.

Especially when they post things like this.

This was posted on the same day as that stomach churning food photo.

They're not even trying to pretend they haven't claimed our home as their personal playground.  They've actually posted a photo of themselves using our raised bed garden as their own personal seating.  A garden that was not designed to be used as seating and, as an object, is not part of any easement.

You can even see the "private property" sign in the back ground.  Two of them!

Yo!  Picketers!  Get your lazy butts off our garden wall before you wreck it!

Another invasion planned, and illegal blocking

With the Labour Day weekend coming up, we all knew that AUPE would have another invasion of our home planned.

It's even been announced on their website.

No splashy ads this time, and no free Fat Franks, thankfully.

They are planning a potluck, though.  From 11-3 on Monday, AUPE picketers will be using our home for their party.

Our home.

But they've never had any respect for our homes, or private property.

Sure, they're working on their new public image of how quiet it supposedly is on the picket line.  They've even published an "interview" on their facebook page of someone from the twitterverse who came here and was all shocked about how people weren't crapping on the sidewalks and stuff.

Funny how there was someone there to interview a person who supposedly showed up at random to check things out for themselves.

Obviously, not someone who was well informed and didn't know that AUPE has been putting on a public show.  Someone who never got to see what they're like, say, out back of the high rise.  Someone who apparently thinks that, just because they saw their current behaviour, after having been forced to back off from their previous tactics, the past somehow just didn't happen, and everything is hunky-dorey.

Of course, no one *in* Artspace had any notion this person was coming here and they never got a chance to talk to people who live here about the effects AUPE's actions have had on our community; the people who have been targeted for abuse for months, and who's health has been damaged.

Even the title of the audio file, A visitor to SAIL, is bogus.  The visitor never saw SAIL, because the picketers aren't *at* SAIL.  They are at Artspace.  Our home.

But then, AUPE has always tried to mix that up to excuse the fact that they are still picketing our private homes.

And, of course, they don't get to see what's still going on, even if things are supposedly so "peaceful" right now.

Like this morning, when the picketers demonstrated that they don't need bull horns to be heard all down the street.  They were blocking the replacement workers again, and sounded like they were having quite the grand ol' time while they did it, with some ridiculously loud and weird cackling.

For a group that is demanding "respect" they sure don't seem to respect anyone or anything else.

Including that "private property" sign they're standing next to.  They keep creeping farther and farther into our parking lot.

Also, what they are doing here is not actually legal.  This is how it was explained to us by the police.

The purpose of a picket line is to inform.  Once they are done informing, the person being blocked has the right to leave.  They cannot continue to block you.

This includes the security vehicle.

They have the right to block for a "reasonable" length of time - the time it takes to inform.  Once the driver says they are informed, they can start moving forward.

The picketers are supposed to move.

The police warned us that they will complain about being hit, but if they don't move out of the way, charges could be laid against the picketers.

If, on the other hand, all they are doing is yelling insults, like when they were busily telling the replacement workers that they were garbage and pieces of shit, among other things, there is NO requirement to sit there and take it.

As you can see in the photo above, the picketers are making no effort to inform anyone of anything.  They pretty much never do.

Problem is, obviously, this is not enforced.

It's also rather hard to start moving forward when people are actually leaning on the vehicle.

Or perhaps "lounging" would be a better description.

They certainly aren't allowed to block people just because they are ticked, like in these images...

This image is from some video taken when the picketers decided to block a couple of people for 20 minutes.  They made it clear that the person was being punished for their pictures being put on the internet.  They made no attempt to inform and the only communication was to insult, such as the moment this image was screen capped from, where she is calling the people inside the van "bullies."

That's right.  They block two people - leaving the security vehicle they were blocking moments before, and inside the parking space, well into private property - for 20 minutes out of sheer spite, and she says it's the people in the vehicle who are the bullies.

Not too swift, that one.

As near as can be made out, considering they were yelling on top of each other at the time, the person on the far right is yelling "get out."

Sooo... they are blocking the vehicle from moving, and telling them to leave at the same time?

Not the swiftest, either.

What it basically amounts to is that virtually every time they have blocked a vehicle for this entire strike has been illegal.

Including when the security vehicle is being blocked.

Oops, they did it again (Updated)

Since noticing that AUPE has their own count-up timer on their website, counting the number of days under lockout, we've been wondering what they would do for today.  Based on their counter, today would have been day 100.

So far, nothing much has been going on outside.  Aside from tending our raised bed garden, that is; despite the "private property, no trespassing" signs all over the place, like the one below, they've manipulated one of our members (in their efforts to divide and conquer, they have been nice to some members, aggressive with others) into allowing them to "help" tend the flowers and herbs, which requires trespassing.

Which means they are deliberately putting one of our vulnerable members (and an amazing survivor, which makes it rather more despicable) into a position where she is acting counter to an official statement from the co-op; someone they've been using to their advantage for pretty much the entire labour dispute.  It is painful to watch her being manipulated like this.

To be clear, this has nothing to do with the labour dispute, but with the safety of our members.  Those signs went up because someone allowed the picketers into the high rise, much to the alarm of other members.  The garden beds are Artspace private property and have nothing to do with SAIL; garden beds they still treat as their own playground, picking through them, leaning against the walls (at least they seem to have stopped actually sitting on them), including the walls along the driveway to the underground parking, completely ignoring the no trespassing signs right behind them.

Overall, though, it's been quiet today.  There are hardly any picketers, and aside from the trespassing and using some of our members for their own benefit, there's not much going on out there.

It was a curious thing, until some of us went back to the AUPE website.

And caught them re-writing history, again.

They've changed the start date of their counter.

Unfortunately, no one got a screen cap of the previous counter, but since they neglected to change the text, they now have this...

It's still different from our own (the difference may be whether or not the counter counts the immediate date, or perhaps because the strike started in the afternoon, and someone knew the exact, official time the strike started), but now they're saying that the SAIL staff (not SAIL, since that's the company name, so that's another error on their part) have been locked out for 111 days.

Now, if they'd stuck with the lock out date, today would have been day 100, but since they've moved to the starting date of the strike but forgot to fix the text, they are now falsely claiming that the staff have been locked out for this long.

Oops.

AUPE, caught trying to re-write history again.

Update:

Okay, seriously, you guys?

So AUPE has gone and changed their counter again.

And they STILL got it wrong.

Since they apparently need us to tell them this, let me try and give them a hand.

Here's the new screen cap.

I just had to include their cute little retro TV graphic, linking to their slick propaganda video.  I invite you to watch it.  Especially starting around 3:45.

Why, you ask?

Because it's a set up.  The woman in the wheelchair is Meagan; you can read about her here.

AUPE basically had that picketer hang around, then force a hug on Meagan.  She did not want that person approaching her, did not want a hug, and did not know she was being recorded for an AUPE video.  In fact, AUPE has been served legal notice to remove the video because she did not give permission for herself to be used as a prop for their propaganda video.

Obviously, AUPE has ignored it.

Then there is the changed counter text.  "SAIL has been on the line..."

No, SAIL has not.  Supports for Artspace Independent Living is the employer.  A company.

AUPE is basically saying that the employer has been picketing themselves.

And finally there's the little graphic below.  That's a link to the picketing schedule.

112 / 7 = 16.

It's been 16 weeks.  Not 14.

Okay, so the lock out has been about 14 weeks, but since the strike has never ended (it was only "suspended"), and the counter is now all about the length of time on the picket line, the two next to each other just makes it look like a contradiction.

How many times are they going to goof up a simple counter?

AUPE still playing the game

After yesterday's respite, where no picketers showed up at all, they were back again today.

About the only thing we can be thankful for is that they're being quiet.

A member sent these screen caps from the AUPE Facebook page.

Here, AUPE is still trying to pretend that what has been done to us for that past 100 plus days can just be disappeared, because LO!  Behold!  They have long, boring video of picketers behaving.

While we can appreciate that the backlash has forced AUPE to get the picketers to at least tone down their behaviour in front of their cameras, they still refuse to acknowledge a couple of things.

First off, they are still picketing our private homes (and brazenly trespass). In fact, the camera they are using to record these videos is on our private property, so every video from that camera is evidence of their trespassing.

They continue to treat our home as if it is a care facility; a work site.

These are our homes.

Second, the incidents haven't stopped.  Off camera, people are still being stalked, harassed and entrapped.

The staged videos AUPE is putting up only proves that, when the picketers are in front of their own cameras, they sort of behave.

I say "sort of" because this morning, they still engaged in verbal harassment by yelling at them from across the street, despite being repeatedly told not to engage this family.

They continue to call out people by name, when those people do not know them (in regards to misconduct, this demonstration of personal knowledge falls under intimidation and infiltration).

They were seen stealing flowers from our garden beds.

They blocked the replacement workers for so long, a SAIL user member missed a medical appointment.

The fact remains that, as long as they are picketing our private homes, blocking traffic in our private parking, etc., they continue to cause harm to members who live here.  The effects of psychological abuse do not go away just because the abuser isn't actively engaging in overt abuse.  So much damage has been done to our members, the mere presence of the picketers continues to cause harm.

Here we have AUPE once again trying to manipulate public image through misinformation.

First off, the mediator didn't say SAIL had enough money.  The mediator only compared with other collective agreements - with large facilities like hospitals - and basically dismissed SAIL's financial information as irrelevant.

There was no compromise.

Why would a mediator recommend something that would bankrupt SAIL?  Why would a mediator not even consider the actual amount of money SAIL gets?

We have no idea.

Also, "SAIL" did not vote against it.  AUPE is either demonstrating a complete lack of understanding of how SAIL works, or deliberately misleading the public.

Let's explain it again.

SAIL is run by a volunteer board.  The board looked at the mediator recommendation, discussed options, figured out which would be the best to choose.

The board presented this information to the SAIL user members, fully informing them in regards to the recommendation and the different options, then presented their own recommendation.

Members then discussed options and the user members voted to accept the one the board recommended.

A media statement was released the next day.

AUPE already had professionally printed pamphlets ready and picketers began their retaliation against Arstpace, as they had already threatened to do, immediately.  Which rather implies they knew the recommendation was not financially viable, and that SAIL and SAIL users had no real choice but to reject it.

Back to the screen cap above; AUPE next plays the public image manipulation game.  It is the care staff that is being bullied, you see.  How?  By being offered "pennies" and with a lock out.  As if the lock out were some sort of punishment, rather than to protect our own user members from people they no longer felt safe allowing into their homes.

Never mind that those "pennies" - plus benefits - where the best SAIL could offer and still remain solvent (especially before SAIL even know how much the new funding from AHS was going to be - funding that has actually decreased, because there are fewer user members).

Never mind that the care workers were already being paid highest in their field, when comparing apples to apples instead of apples to watermelons.

Never mind that, had SAIL accepted the recommendation, it would have bankrupted them and those same care workers AUPE claims to defend would be out their jobs.

Then they really lay it on by saying SAIL's "allies" are claiming their "legal right to a picket line is terrorism and abuse..."

No, AUPE.  We've never tried to deny anyone their right to picket.  We've said it time and again; we want the labour regulations for picketing to be enforced.

1) peaceful (and that means always, not just when posing for AUPE cameras)
2) at the place of employment (not on private property, not our homes)
3) no unlawful activity, no misconduct.

And, given the actions of picketers - most of whom are not the striking/locked out care staff - we would also like to see accountability for those unlawful acts and misconduct.

AUPE, what's done is done.  The videos (including so much more than we've been able to get online) are the evidence.

At this point, AUPE is starting to sound like Baghdad Bob.

The person they were talking to seemed to catch on to that.

I have to admit, I don't know where this person got that particular information; the driver was a visitor helping a pregnant woman who was moving in, and they were leaving.  The driver also was very careful to drive *between* picketers (who should not have been blocking him in the first place), and it was the picketers who put themselves in harm's way by jumping in front.  No one was hurt.

The writer is correct, however, in that the people being hassled have already been diminished and hassled all their lives.  It was through their efforts to reclaim their dignity and independence that Artspace and SAIL came into existence.

These are the people that AUPE is attacking.

These are the people who fought for Artspace to be built - a place with many accessible units aimed at providing affordable housing and designed for the independence of people with disabilities.

The people who fought to have an in-house care company, consumer driven and volunteer run, that would allow them to control who provided them with the care they needed, who could come in and out of their own homes, control their own care, and have help available, 24/7 should unexpected needs arise.

These are the people AUPE claims are bullying the care workers.

These are the people AUPE is targeting.

They especially like to target this person.

And this person.

That fact remains that AUPE has chosen to target a community filled with some of the most vulnerable people; people with both visible and invisible disabilities, the elderly and even children and our pets.

They are not picketing a company.  They are not picketing an employer.

They are picketing a community.  Our families.  Our friends.  Our homes.

And they have done so so aggressively, that it has caused medical harm to many of our members.

They have done so in such a way as to create an atmosphere of fear and anxiety within our own homes, to the point that members cannot look outside their own windows are enjoy their own balconies and patios without being harassed.

They not only continue to pretend that their actions have been "peaceful", but they even stepped it up with another invasion of our street; an illegal block party that they call a "picket line." - and STILL pretended they were being "peaceful."

Then they bag about it.

Know that this picture is from a day when our community was overrun with strangers, when people felt trapped in their homes, while AUPE members and their "guests" trespassed and assaulted us with high levels of noise.

This event that they so proudly show off was actually held 101 days into this dispute, in an obvious punishment for our own silent vigil at day 100.

We at Artspace remain under siege by an hostile force, intent on taking control of the care company that provides personal care to a few of our members.

We at Artspace still cannot enjoy the peace of our own homes.

All because our members dare to want control over who enters those homes.

All because our members are fighting to keep the in-house care company that allows them to live independent lives outside of institutions solvent.

All because we refuse to bow down to bullying, intimidation, coercion, provocation, threats, abuse and unlawful acts.

AUPE - in between blaming others for their picketers' behaviour, or justifying it by saying that sure, sometimes things get "heated" on the picket line - tries to pretend that they are just trying to do "what's right"

By that statement, they seem to be saying that the abuse of our community - which they admit they have done at senior's centres, too - for more than 100 days is perfectly acceptable

It is not.

On the inside

We admins here at Artspace Under Siege don't have a twitter account.  Maintaining this blog takes a great deal of time and energy.  Some of us are able bodied, some are not, and some are somewhere in between.  Adding twitter on top of this blog is a bit more than we can add to our plates.

Some of our non-admin members, however, do have twitter accounts, and one had been tweeting - with an injury! - during the Saturday invasion.  Here are some of her tweets.

AUPE kept insisting their invasion of our community was "friendly" and "peaceful."

What is that saying, about a lie repeated often enough?

AUPE, if people in the community feel threatened and trapped in their homes because a crowd showed up at their front doors and held and illegal block party/political rally, telling them you're being "friendly" or "peaceful" doesn't change that.  Denying them their feelings is classic abuser behaviour.

The comment about a member trying to speak, but being cut off and drowned out, is typical of trying to have a "conversation" with anyone on the picket line (unless it's staged, of course).  They don't dialogue.  They don't listen.  They interrupt, insult, mindlessly repeat scripted talking points, yell, intimidate and behave in a threatening manner, such as looming over someone (particularly distressing to people in wheelchairs) or swarming.  A real conversation is simply not possible with this crowd.

As for the police, they did eventually come.  Sort of.  They drove through a few times.  One police vehicle arrived around 1:30, which a lot of the invaders had already packed up and left, the drumming had stopped, the political rally was over, etc.  Nothing was done.

What is frustrating is to be told by the police that we should take it to the labour board.

This isn't about the labour dispute. Most of us have nothing to do with the labour dispute.  This is about having our neighbourhood invaded with sudden party, complete with free Fat Franks,
with lots of noise and yelling and chanting, trespassing on private property, blocking the street, causing people to fear leaving their own homes, even causing distress to our pets.  These are things that should fall under police jurisdiction.

Laws should not be suspended because someone has slapped the label of "labour dispute" or "picket line" on their activities.

Retaliation is all it is, really.

Artspace members have stood up to AUPE for 100 days.  Our community, most of whom have no say in the labour dispute, have been targeted for abusive misconduct while they picket our private homes.

They try to blame SAIL for their actions.  Try to turn us against each other.  Try to tell us that if only SAIL would do what they want, give them what they want, they would go away (sounds like extortion, doesn't it?).

They threaten us with increased picketer misconduct if SAIL doesn't do what they demand, and when they don't get their way, the retaliate against our entire community.  Not even our neighbours can escape the effects.

AUPE tries to create this image of SAIL being this big, bad, oppressive company that has mistreated its employees and oppressed those poor, immigrant women.

What they forget is that SAIL is a volunteer board of Artspace members.

They are not some faceless corporation or distant management.

They are our friends.  Our neighbours.

They are people we can talk to at any time.

We are on the inside of all this.

Fully informed.

Fully aware.

AUPE's attempts to control the image of what's happening here might work on their members who know only what AUPE tells them.

It won't work on those of us who are in the middle of it all.

The Siege Continues

We have been invaded.

In retaliation for holding out for 100 days, AUPE has shown up on our street with an illegal block party.  They have been seen cutting through our parking lot, are blocking traffic and are screaming and yelling.

They also have Fat Franks back, with a BBQ set up at the end of the street and are screaming and yelling.

They are chanting NDP NDP.

Sounds like a political rally.

People are talking about being trapped; they can't leave their homes, and are feeling threatened by the loud and boisterous crowd outside our home.

The only traffic they are letting through are their own supporters.

EPS has yet to respond to this invasion of our home.

AUPE still faking it (updated)

It's been brought to our attention just what AUPE is doing with their camera in the pee patch.  They've been posting long, boring videos of the "peaceful" picket line.

Just out of curiosity, AUPE.  Do you really think people are that stupid?  Of course the picketers would be on their best behaviour in front of your own cameras.  We all know it's staged.

I must admit, the one with the poor kid, seen several times before on the picket line, playing around the pee patch was disheartening.

Funny.  Aside from the photo proudly displayed on the AUPE Facebook page, I don't see the shots of them trespassing, like this one from yesterday.

Or this one from this morning.

I wonder just what is going to be shown about the incident this evening - they certainly had their cameras out, but given the circumstances, it would be very bad for their image to show how they, once again on private property, terrorized a woman and her dog.

The woman in question is a replacement worker, but she wasn't here to work.  She was here to visit.

The picketers have been trying to get her for some time; another one of the people they have targeted for extra abuse.

Here are screen caps of a text conversation between herself and an friend while it was happening (name blurred out for privacy).

These "peaceful" picketers lay in wait for this woman, surrounded her and threatened to smash her windows.  Note the time stamp on the texts.

Artspace members came to take her dog, who was so traumatized that she urinated all over the people who tried to help her.  While the dog was rescued from the hot van, the woman could not leave.

Another member tried to talk to them and, in typical fashion with the picketers, it turned into a shouting match.

We at Artspace, on the other hand, are experiencing something far, far different from the bland image AUPE is trying to portray.

The fact remains, AUPE, that you are picketing our homes.

You are still invading our community.

You are terrorizing our visitors.

You are even abusing people's dogs - and the children of your picketers are brought over and left to play in their urine.

So go ahead, AUPE.  Post your boring, staged videos and pretend that people are too stupid to know better.  Go ahead and try and manipulate the public and try and hide what's really going on.

The truth will always come out.

Update: After talking to other witnesses, we learned another sickening detail.
When someone came to get the dog from the van, the picketers actually commented and laughed about the dog getting sick from the heat in the van.
They took pleasure in the fact that a dog was becoming ill from the heat.
They continued to keep a woman trapped in that same heat.
Their actions could have resulted in serious injury or death, to both an animal and a human.

AUPE still trying to hide

A supporter sent this in:

IF THAT AIN’T AN ADMISSION OF GUILT, I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS
So I went on AUPE’s facebook page this morning and commented on one of the posts (or comment) I saw from an AUPE member.......all I said to him was, “see for yourself, check out the video footage on artspaceundersiege.com”. AUPE’s response to me was to go to the picket line and see for myself! I responded with “I have, it was my pregnant daughter that AUPE’s “lawyer” was mocking and harassing”.

Again I urged any AUPE member that might be second guessing the tactics used, don’t take my word for it but go to artspaceundersiege.com!! They DELETED all my comments and have blocked me from commenting anymore!

Talk about keeping people in the dark.
Please go and do the same!!!!

Quite a number of people have reported commenting on the AUPE Facebook page about what is happening here at Artspace, then having their comments removed and getting blocked from commenting.

Of course, anyone who runs a Facebook page has every right to remove comments and block people.  Usually it's done because people are trolling the page, leaving hateful comments, harassing people, etc.  Friends of SAIL has had to do that when people from AUPE would "like" the page, then leave comments that showed they weren't "friends" of SAIL at all.  Some would use the page to stalk Artspace members online, and a lot of people no longer feel safe posting there anymore.

This is not a matter removing offencive language or trolls.  What AUPE is doing is removing comments and blocking people who are challenging their image of themselves as victims, with SAIL and Artspace members as the bullies.  Of course, they are inviting people to come out to the picket line now, which means the picketers have had their leashes pulled in tight.

And yet, they still do things like this.

This is a screen capture of their Facebook page.  I'll admit, I didn't catch it right away; they have posted so many of these in front of the high rise, I didn't notice the location.

So AUPE is busily trying to pretend that all the stuff that the picketers have been doing is just hype and exaggerated (kind of hard to exaggerate what's on video), pretending that this has been a "peaceful" picket line, and going so far as to censor their Facebook page to prevent people visiting from seeing what's really going on.

Then they post a photo of AUPE picketers - including AUPE staff - trespassing on Artspace property.  The same group that, as posted yesterday, then began to verbally harass an Artspace member recording their transgression, and are then heard talking about targeting an individual.

Are they really so proud of the fact that they have invaded our homes, that they have no compunction about posting pictures of it on their Facebook page?

Update: video taken of this photo shoot.

Another day in the siege

With all the recent publicity AUPE has been getting lately, they seem to have tried to reign in the picketers.

About the only thing we can really say is that they're being quieter about their harassment.

Here are a few things people submitted today.

This one was from fairly early in the morning.  While there is a tacit agreement that the picketers can go further into the parking lot to block the security vehicle without also blocking the road, there is no security vehicle in sight.  They're just hanging out, right next to the private property sign on the wall.

This video is from later in the morning.

The picketers are again on private property.  The back lane is partly on City land, partly on Artspace property, but the gravel area is all Artspace property - and no, they don't have permission to be there.

They left for their 4 hour lunch break shortly after that, so we never did find out what plans they had for the care worker they were talking about at the end of the video.

Except, they didn't quite leave.

One of our members had an accident today, and an ambulance was called (she was injured, but she's more or less okay, thankfully).  Another member met the paramedics to give them some information.  That's when it was noticed that they were being watched.

The woman heard talking directly to the person with the video camera was in the union's rental van, eating her lunch, and watching Artspace.

That's some dedication; she sacrificed her lunch period to sit in a van for hours, watching us.  It's not the first time she's sacrificed for the cause like this.

Too bad she's so dedicated to abusing people who live in Artspace.  Later in the afternoon, she verbally harassed a member for looking out her own window.  It seems AUPE picketers expect to be able to invade our community, trespass on our property, but no one living here is allowed to look out their windows while they are there.  They act as if they can do whatever they want, but we who live here as somehow expected to pretend like there's nothing wrong with what they are doing, or even to look at them.

Perhaps the most disturbing incident happened well away from Artspace.  One of our families tried going to a movie this evening.  While there, they were approached by none other than Captain Creeper.  From the statement submitted, it appears he actually stalked them.

Which brings up an interesting problem.

Artspace members, visiting friends and family, and our neighbours, have been targeted by AUPE picketers, including the picketing care staff, for some of the most horrendous abuse.

For the picketers, they come here for their shifts, then they get to go on with their lives and pretend like this is normal.

What happens when Artspace members are going about their daily lives and suddenly find themselves face-to-face with the people who have been abusing them here at home.  We have members who go to the Folk Fest. AUPE has volunteers there, including The Urinator.

Can you imagine standing in line at the grocery store, turning around and discovering the person who threatened to "take you out" is standing there?

Or the person who was heard yelling at you for daring to come out on your balcony just a few hours earlier?

Or walking/wheeling down the street, then crossing paths with someone who had blocked you in your vehicle, shouting insults and you, taunting you, harassing you, just hours before?

That is what we have to live with now.

The people who have invaded our homes are also people who go after us elsewhere, including online.

What AUPE is doing to us goes well beyond our homes.

We're not safe from them anywhere.

Where is SAIL? Where is Artspace?

Before I begin, I wish to welcome all our new visitors.  Thank you for coming here, and for your amazing support.  We are truly grateful.  I invite you to go through the archives and go back in time to see what we in Artspace have had to live with since the labour dispute began.  This post describes what a typical day at Artspace has been like.

There are a few areas of confusion around that I want to use this post to clear up.

First, we here at Artspace Under Siege are just a bunch of Artspace members, friends and family.  We do not speak for Artspace Housing Co-op.  We do not speak for SAIL.  We speak for ourselves and for our community.

Second, I want to clarify what is what.

Artspace Housing Co-op is an intentional community.  You can read about what co-ops are, here.  Artspace consists of an 8 story high rise and a row of townhouses, totaling 88 units.

Artspace is unique among co-ops, however.  Twenty four years ago, a dedicated group of people with disabilities, their families and their supporters, fought - and won - to have affordable housing that would allow individuals with various disabilities to be able to live independently, rather than in institutions.  Through their strength of will, Artspace was created and became one of the few housing co-ops with a large percentage of units that are wheelchair adapted.

Which leads us to the next part about Artspace that makes it unique.

SAIL.  Supports for Artspace Independent Living.  SAIL is run by a volunteer board, and answers to Alberta Health (AHS) and SAIL user members.  Some of the board members are also SAIL users, so there is significant incentive to ensure it is run well.  The SAIL office is located in one of the 88 units of Artspace, a converted 2 bedroom apartment.

SAIL staff consists almost entirely of Home Care Aides, plus a director and LPN who provide the medical care the HCAs are not allowed to do.  Unlike most HCAs, they do not have to travel from site to site, but remain available at SAIL during unscheduled hours - down time - in case a user member has an unexpected need.  If someone falls, has a spill, or has some other issue that they cannot handle on their own, a HCA is just a page or call away.  Though it often means the HCAs have anywhere from 4-7 hours (depending on the shift) of down time per 8 hour shift - essentially being paid to wait around in the SAIL office, just in case - this 24/7 availability is an essential part of the in-house home care model.

SAIL is funded entirely by AHS.  The funding is based on assessed care hour needs of however many user members there happens to be, which can change dramatically, as members might need to switch to Self-Managed Care, move on to long term care if their needs exceed what SAIL or SMC can provide or, sadly, pass away.  There can be up to 30 members using SAIL, but at the moment, there is about half that number.  That funding SAIL receives covers costs plus staff wages.

It is the SAIL Home Care Aides that chose to go on strike, and are now locked out.  See the timeline here.

The first problem for Artspace members is that AUPE and the striking care staff are not picketing SAIL, but Artspace.  This has been an area of confusion for people, as Artspace has often been mistakenly referred to as a care centre, care facility or even as SAIL itself.  AUPE has designated Artspace as a number of things, from being a care facility, to being a work site, etc., to justify their picketing of our private homes.

For those who have been trying to understand this, here are some photos to explain where SAIL is, and where Artspace is.

This is SAIL.

This area here is on the East side of the high rise.

The graveled area is where SAIL staff would park their vehicles, and there is the path up to the SAIL office.

(August 12 update: This morning, picketers gathered in a group on the graveled parking area here - not in the area of the photo, but farther in.  On seeing someone take video of them trespassing, one of them claimed that this is where we have said they can be.

No.  This is not where anyone said they could be.  They need to ask permission to go onto private property, and Artspace members need to give it.  Until then, they are still trespassing our homes.  That includes the parking spots members pay to use.)

(update again: somehow, in adding the previous update, the original text for the above photo disappeared.  New description has been added.)

Unfortunately, after the strike began, these signs had to be put up.  The first, in red on the left, directs people to the Artspace entrance.  This entrance (the door next to these signs) is for SAIL only, not Artspace.  The office, of course, also has an inside entrance, as staff go from the office to the private homes of user members in the high rise.

The second sign had to be put up after picketing staff ended up inside the high rise, having been allowed in by someone who didn't know better at the time.  That sign is on other entrances as well.

These are the grounds in front of SAIL.  This is private Artspace property, however Artspace members would have been willing to allow the picketers to use this space (it would probably have had to go to vote).  As you can see, it's a rather pleasant area, nicely shaded from the summer sun, with some shelter from the elements.

Here are the grounds from the other side.  They could have set up their Timmies table, and probably their shelter as well.  It likely would have killed the grass, but grass can be reseeded.

In this location, they would have been picketing the employer's place of business and, as per regulations, they would have been able:
to persuade or endeavour to persuade anyone not to
     (a) enter the employer’s place of business, operations or employment,
     (b) deal in or handle the products of the employer, or
     (c) do business with the employer.

That's not what they did.

This is Artspace.

This photo includes part of the East raised bed gardens.  These were designed for accessibility, including the ones on the foreground that are designed so a wheelchair can fit under the table planter (it was even built to a custom height for a member with a slightly taller than usual wheelchair).  Several people have signed up for specific plots that they tend.  Too bad you can't see the amazing tomato plants in a bed off frame to the right.  They're huge!

The high rise address is the official picket line, as published by AUPE, rather than just unit 103, the SAIL office.

The picketers don't usually go this far, except when the media are around, or if they're going around to the lane to the back of the high rise.

They do tend to go in front of the main doors, where the awning is, and hassle people trying to go in and out of Artspace, people doing deliveries, or the DATS drivers trying to do pick-ups.   They were very upset when the DATS drivers put the needs of their passengers over the union's demands that they force disabled members to go beyond Artspace for pick up.  If the picketers decide to hang out during their 4 hour lunch break, mail does not get delivered.  They hassle the mail carrier, too, so he won't cross the picket line.

When it comes to Artspace members and visitors, they pick and choose who they hassle.  Some people get bothered a lot, others have never been hassled at all.  A transparent tactic to try and play Artspace members against each other, as well as against SAIL.

For a while, they would set up chairs, facing the lobby, where one or two of them would sit there, watching the lobby.  Their previous "captain" would sit there using his bull horn sometimes, when he wasn't going around Artspace, recording video of people's homes and activities, stalking people walking their dogs off site, and generally earning the nickname, Captain McCreepypants or Creeper - though when he was seen peeing on the sidewalk, people started calling him The Urinator.  Before than, he was the Red Hat Guy.

This is the West garden bed.  Lately, this space at the sidewalk is where they set up their Timmies table.  This garden bed is where they most often congregate, sometimes setting up folding chairs or a camera tripod.  They lean and sit on the walls of the garden bed a lot.

It was not built to support that sort of use.

For greater accessibility, the area was divided into two sections, so that gardeners could reach farther into the beds.  The section on the left is one beam higher.

Though clearly marked as private property, picketers ignore the signs.  They go into the path and are sometimes seen mucking about in people's plants.  There are often one or two of them with their butts parked on the higher side and their feet up on the lower side.

Did I mention these weren't built to support this kind of use?  The occasional sitting or leaning wouldn't be a problem, but not to this extent!

These garden beds are only a few years old.  After they were built, we would get people walking onto our little, hidden street to look at them and take pictures.  It wasn't unusual for them to stop and ask questions, too.  It was all very pleasant and community friendly.

No one does that anymore.

They also go along the West wall of the bed, towards the patio.  Again, private property and well past the 4 ft easement, which is supposed to allow picketers to step off public sidewalks briefly onto private property and not get hit with trespassing.  This makes sense, as it allows picketers to move out of the way and allow people to go by, go around things, or just accidentally step off the sidewalk.

They ignore the 4 ft easement rule completely and just part their butts on the wall, or wander into...

... here.  These are the entry and exit driveways to the underground parking.  They block a lot of people here, going in or out.  These are folks just trying to go in and out of their homes.  There have been a few incidents of picketers jumping in front of moving vehicles here, striking the vehicles with their hands and sometimes claiming that they were hit.  The first time that happened was on the first day of the strike, as someone was trying to go into the underground parking.

One of the things Artspace does is have an annual cleaning of the underground parking.  Members who pay for spots in there are asked to park their vehicles elsewhere until it is done, and the doors are left open for some hours.

We were advised by the police to skip the clean up until after the picketers are gone, as it would be a security issue to have the doors open while they are here.

Artspace also has a spring and fall clean up day, where members spend a couple of hours picking up garbage, raking lawns, sweeping the sidewalks, etc.  Weather willing, spring clean up is done in April.  Weather was not willing this year, so it was to be done in May.

It got skipped this year, because of the strike.

This is the driveway into the above ground parking.  In order to prevent blocking the road, the picketers allow the security vehicle with replacement worker to go past the sidewalk, and the picketers are allowed to go past the 4 ft easement and not be charged with trespassing.

Unfortunately, they ignore that, too.  Not only do they wander past the 4 ft easement, they have been seen cutting through the parking lot to get to the back, where some of them park their cars on 94th Street.

Aside from the security vehicle, which they have blocked for more than an hour, and even as long as 2 hours, they also block people going in an out that are members living here, or people who are visiting.  Who they block and for how long seems to depend on what mood they're in that day.

Lately, they've been spending a lot more time wandering around at - and in - the driveways.  Apparently, it's because that's where the people they need to talk to are.  Who that might be, I have no idea.  Aside from the security vehicle, no one who goes through here is doing so to "do business with the employer."  They are going through because they live here and that's where their parking spots are, or they are visiting and need to access the back area for some reason.

This is where, in the AUPE video, an organiser is seen lining the care staff up like bowling pins.  Kind of puts a different twist to the term, "throw them under the bus."

This is the pee patch.  It used to be a grassy area, but it was gravelled over so that members could take their dogs there to pee, without the urine burning any grass.  The use of gravel also leaves less scent for coyotes from the river valley to come up and investigate.

Yes, we have coyotes in downtown Edmonton.

There used to be a "private property" sign taped to the Artspace sign, but the weather tore that off long ago.  The picketers ignored it, anyhow.  They'll go into the pee patch and lean on the sign, put their camera tripod in it, set chairs up in the gravel (then drag them out, around the curb, taking gravel out with it), sit on the curb or against the street light.  There have been times when they have brought kids to the picket line, and they've been seen playing in there, too.

Of all the places to choose to trespass, their insistence in using the pee patch is perhaps the strangest - and grossest - of all.

This is part of the back of the above ground parking.  Picketers will sometimes hang out here, too, either at the posts, or inside the parking lot, sitting on the curb.

This cul de sac is also where they have recently blocked one of the care workers; the only SAIL staff to vote against unionising, but who also provided Self Managed Care for an Artspace member as a second job.  She still provides Self Managed Care, and has been horrifically targeted for abuse by her former co-workers.  She's the one a former co-worker was threatening in the security video montage.

She was blocked farther ahead on this street, about where the farthest parked car can be seen in the above photo, for 1 1/2 hours, enduring abuse the entire time.  What's most disturbing about watching the short bits of video she posted on Facebook is just how much they all seem to be enjoying tormenting her.

She's a really amazing person, and I admire her for her strength and dignity through months of harassment, and am disgusted that it has been allowed to get as bad as it has, without any consequences.

Beyond the parked cars is the grounds to the old Alex Taylor Elementary School, now home of E4C.  Members go to the grounds to walk their dogs.  One of our members, who has PTSD and uses a walker, was stalked by Creeper as he walked his dog there.  As you can see, this area well away from SAIL or Artspace.

Now, we move on to the townhouse side of the street.  Each townhouse has its own street address, so they are not part of the official address for the picket line.  There is one member in the townhouses who used SAIL, but after the strike started, he stopped the service so that the replacement workers would not have to put up with abuse while crossing the street to provide his care.  No, he does not have Self Managed Care.  He is making do without the home care he qualifies for.

They still picket on this side.  They sometimes sit on the stairs (yes, more trespassing) to upper level units, hang out at the mail box and use it as a table and sometimes set up their chairs at the top of the ramp to the lower townhouse entrances.  The two posts in the foreground frame the top of the ramp.

The rental van is theirs.  This is the van they claim has been vandalised several times, and which they say has had its tires slashed several times.  I have only been able to confirm a flat tire, once, and the only damage seen on the vehicle was damage they had done themselves.  I have not been able to find anyone who has seen signs of vandalism.

Sadly, vandalism is not an unusual thing in our neighbourhood.  About a month ago, a member with an above ground parking spot found her windshield smashed.  A couple of nights later, the vehicle next to hers was entered and rifled though.  There is an ongoing problem with people finding ways to enter the high rise, then breaking into units - or using the laundry room!  There have been break-ins in the townhouses, too.

Such is life in the downtown area.

Sometimes, they will set up their chairs by their rental van, either on the sidewalk or on the street behind it.

Then there is this area.  You can see the rails to the ramp in the back, and somewhat closer, the hand rail to a set of stairs to the lower level sidewalk.

The paved section is next to the few parking spots on the townhouse side.  This is where the picketers would camp out, with their chairs, sometimes a cooler, sometimes their table.  They just move right in.  Again, while part of it falls into the 4 foot easement, they are still trespassing when they set up camp here.  There used to be a private property sign there, too, but as usual, they ignored it.

Lately, they haven't been using it much - either because the weather had cooled down and they no longer wanted to use the shade of our tree, or because of the attention of this blog.  Or they're just playing games with us again.  Who knows?

AUPE justifies picketing our homes by claiming Artspace as a work site.  The work site is the SAIL office.  That the care staff would leave the office to go to user members' private homes does not change that.  They are not there to do renovations; they are there to do personal care, assist with meals, and housekeeping/laundry, in people's homes.  They are there for the person, not the unit they are in (and as co-op members, we can transfer units as our needs change and availability arises).

That is the difference between Artspace in general, and the SAIL office.

That's the difference between our private homes and property, and the place of employment.
